SAN MARCOS, TX -
A game of runs ended with an 8-0 Florida Atlantic run and a 68-66 victory over Morehead State University Friday night at the Southwest Texas State Classic in San Marcos, TX. Kristy Halvorsen scored the game winner with 16 second left in regulation. LaTorria Matthews led FAU (1-2) with 19 points. Tammy Vaughn had 13 while Jill Banse had 10. The Owls held the Lady Eagles scoreless over the final 4:04 of play.
Florida Atlantic held a 33-29 advantage at the half in a game delayed 30 minutes due to the late arrival of the officiating crew. Banse scored all 10 of her points in the first half. She finished with 11 rebounds as well to give her the first double-double of her young collegiate career.
In the second half, FAU broke out to a 38-31 lead with 19:08 left to play before MSU (1-2) countered with a 12-0 run that led to an eventual 48-40 lead for the Lady Eagles with 12:44 to play. The game of runs continued as FAU returned with an 11-2 run to take a 51-50 lead with 8:31 to play.
Trailing 64-57 with 4:30 to play, FAU's Yolette McPhee made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to four points. MSU's Jody Sizemore, who finished with a team-high 17 points, scored on the next trip down to give Morehead State a 66-60 lead with 4:04 to play.
The Lady Owls closed on an 8-0 run which included two field goals on second chance opportunities. Halvorsen's game-winner came off of an offesnive rebound. It was an area FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan felt was the key to FAU's victory.
"We had a goal to outrebound Morehead State in this game," said Dugan. "We were down two rebounds at the half, and I was proud of the way our team controlled the boards down the stretch."
Another factor for FAU was the play of its two returning seniors, including Tamala Vaughn whose 13 points and six rebounds were a season-high.
"I was so proud of the way Tammy played tonight," added Dugan. "With all that she's been through the past month, her intensity and leadership were simply awesome."
Kristy Halvorsen scored nine points and had a team-high 12 rebounds. Matthews had 10 rebounds to go along with her 19 points. The Lady Owls ended up outrebounding the Lady Eagles 55-51. FAU also held an advantage from the field, shooting 36-percent compared to MSU's 33-percent.
FAU next plays the University of Texas-Pan American Saturday night at 7:00pm.
