BOCA RATON, FL -
Size and fight gave Florida International University a 93-65 victory over host Florida Atlantic University in the two-teams' season opener, Saturday evening.
The Lady Owls started two true freshmen and only two players started the game for FAU that had earned prior playing time for the Lady Owls. The opposite end of the court was comprised of two juniors and three sophomores, all of whom have seen post-season playing time.
"Thank goodness it's November, not March," said Chancellor Dugan, FAU's head coach. "We have a lot of things we need to work on, but a game like this shows where we need to build our strengths. Several players played well like Ruta (Griniute) and DeeAnna (Hanscom).
The Lady Owls were led by two newcomers as Ruta Griniute and DeeAnna Hanscom, both scored 13. FAU senior LaTorria Matthews rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10. Griniute also had a game-high 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards.
The Lady Panthers spread the offense with four players scoring 11 or more points. Gergana Slavtcheva led all scorers with 21. Cheryl Moody scored 14 and led the team with 11 rebounds. Anita Heller and Mandy Shafer added 13 and 11, respectively.
The Lady Owls will next travel to Coral Gables when they play at the University of Miami at 7pm.
