Two-time defending Trans America Athletic Conference champion, Florida Atlantic University started slow, but rallied to take the next three games in a best of five contest against Campbell University, in Friday morning's first round match 7-15, 15-5, 15-9, 15-13.
Campbell, which concluded its 2000 season under the direction of first year head coach Perri Hankins, fell to 17-16 on the season. FAU, which improved to 10-19, will advance in the single-elimination tournament and will face the number one seed Georgia State University, 4 pm, Friday.
In the first game, the two teams knotted at five before Campbell pulled away. The second saw FAU score the nine eight points of the match, take a 13-1 advantage before closing the match at 15-5. Game three see-sawed back and forth, tied for the last time at nine. FAU captured the last six points. The deciding match traded sideouts with the Lady Owls capturing the first point after a foot dig by FAU's Stacey Carlson. The rest of the match followed suit with FAU capturing the big points of a game that evened four times and concluded at the mandatory two point advantage, 15-13.
The Owls were led by three double-digit attackers. The 1999 TAAC Championship MVP, Lori Lombard led the match with 25 kills. Gracie Heim earned 13 kills, despite a strong blocking defense by Campbell and Ashley Bodily had 11. The team's offense was once again guided by setter Stacey Carlson, who had 49 assists. Lombard had a match high 23 digs and Carlson added 21.
Campbell was led by Kara Lewis's 15 kill effort while Abby Jenkins and Tinsley Gordon added 14 and 11, respectively. Pam Hughes had 39 assists and Crystal Brim led the team with 20 digs. Kara Lewis led the match with nine total digs, including three solos.
