BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic University defeated the NWBL USA Elite Team, 123-69, Friday night in an exhibition contest in Boca Raton, FL. Six Lady Owls scored in double-figures with freshman Jill Banse leading FAU with 23 points. Freshman Jameka King had 19, while Ruta Griniute and Sumika Alexander each had 17.
"I was pleased with our effort," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. " I think anytime you take your two senior captains out of the mix and have the kind of effort and intensity we had tonight, it's a good sign."
FAU was playing without its two leading returnees. LaTorria Matthews is out of action after suffering a concussion in practice on Wednesday while Tamala Vaughn is still at home as a result of her father passing away last week.
FAU's only returning player available for action was Kristy Halvorsen. The junior scored 12 points and hauled in a game-high nine rebounds. Yolette McPhee led FAU with nine assists to go along with her 15 points.
"We had a lot of bright spots tonight, mostly on offense," said Dugan. "While we need to work more on our half-court and transition defense, I was nonetheless encouraged because I know we have the talent to be better on defense than we are right now."
Banse, a former Jupiter Christian High standout, went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc. As a team, FAU went 11-for-32 from three-point range. The Lady Owls forced 39 turnovers while committing just 15.
FAU will next host Florida International November 18 at 5:30pm in its first game of the regular season.
