BOCA RATON, FL -
Florida Atlantic University's Jeff Chandler scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 16 minutes left in Wednesday night's 3-2 victory over Stetson University. With the win, FAU improved to 6-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Trans America Athletic Conference play.
The Owls led 1-0 after the first of two goals by Jens Zetterstrom at 24:43. His goal cam from five yards out on the left side from an assist by Christian Wik. The match remained 1-0 into the break.
Zetterstrom put FAU on top 2-0 just 2:27 into the second half when he scored from an assist by Bjorn Masson. If not for two missed Zetterstrom shots, one in the 55thth minute that hit the crossbar and another in the 65th minute that hit the right post, FAU would have had an even greater advantage down the stretch.
Stetson took advantage of the missed opportunities by scoring its first goal at 66:18 on a shot by J.R. Cassadonte. The Hatters tied the match two minutes later on Joe Schoenbauer's goal.
Chandler's game-winner came with 16:01 left on an assist from Masson to put FAU on top for good, 3-2.
"The bottom line is that we won the match, and it's a conference match," said FAU head coach Kos Donev. "I wasn't pleased with our play in the first half, but we attacked better in the second half which led to our second goal."
"The thing we have to improve on is getting that insurance goal. We have to be able to put the thing away when we get the chance," he added.
FAU outshot Stetson 16-13 while the Owls' Jonas Kolstad stopped five Hatter shots. FAU also played the final 4:32 a with a man-advantage as Stetson's Chris Fronk received his second yellow card of the match.
FAU next hosts Campbell University October 11 at 7:30pm.
