Florida Atlantic University claimed its first victory of the season Friday night by upsetting fourth-ranked Alabama-Birmingham, 2-0, at the FIU Soccer Classic in Miami. UAB entered the match with a 2-0 record and was ranked fourth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). With the victory. FAU improves to 1-2 on the year.
The game was scoreless until FAU's Emilliano Aranes scored with 14:35 left in the first half. Pablo Luna assisted Aranes as FAU held the 1-0 advantage through the intermission.
In the second half, FAU continued to hold UAB at bay and added its second goal with 11:29 left in the match when Jens Zeterstrom connected. Zetterstrom was assisted by Bjorn Masson and Federico Santana.
FAU's Jonas Kolstad got the shutout for the Owls with six saves on the night. FAU outshot UAB 13-11.
FAU will next face Evansville Sunday afternoon at 12:30 on the final day of action at the FIU Classic.
