Dr. Tess Palmateer is a licensed psychologist and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. She joined Florida Atlantic University Athletics in August of 2022 as the department's first Director of Athlete Mental Health and Performance.
Dr. Palmateer earned her bachelor's degree, with honors, from Brock University (Canada) where she was a member of the volleyball team. She went on to complete her Masters in exercise science (sport psychology) from the University of Toronto, before earning her doctorate in counseling psychology with an emphasis in sport psychology from the University of North Texas. Dr. Palmateer completed her pre-doctoral internship at the Oklahoma Sport Psychology Consortium, which was composed of two sites: the Psychological Resources for OU Student-Athletes (PROS), which is a mental health counseling center embedded in the University of Oklahoma (OU) Athletics Department, and Commander Counseling & Wellness (CCW), which is a private practice.
Dr. Palmateer continues to make contributions to the field through mentorship and training, giving presentations at national conferences, as well as publishing articles on student-athlete mental health and well-being, eating disorders/disordered eating, assessment and selection in professional sports, and ethical issues in sport psychology. Her clinical interests include sport and performance psychology, identity development, interpersonal functioning, anxiety disorders, and mood disorders.
