David Smolka joined the Florida Atlantic athletics staff in August 2024 as a communications assistant. He oversees the communication efforts for the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams, secondary for men's and women's basketball, while assisting with several other sports as well as historical projects for the department.

In 2026, as the primary contact for swimming & diving, the men's team won their first conference championship in program history, with Daniel Laureyssens becoming the first male Owl to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2006. During the season, Smolka arranged all player and coaches appearances and interviews, as well as writing the teams previews and recaps while overseeing the team's social media pages.

Smolka began his career in collegiate athletics in December 2020 as a part of the FAU stats crew for men’s and women’s basketball. In September of 2021, he added stating football to his game staff resume.

He is currently pursuing his bachelor’s degree in professional studies from Florida Atlantic.

Born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida, Smolka is the son of Florida Atlantic’s Head Cross Country/Track & Field coach Alex Smolka, who joined Paradise in November of 1991 and has been with FAU ever since.
