Maria Alvarez Teran joined the Florida Atlantic University staff in January of 2022 as an assistant coach and works with both the men's and women's teams.
The Owls tallied the nation's only undefeated record in 2025, captured their first American Athletic Conference Tournament match but fell in the semifinal contest to snap the streak. FAU, who was ranked in the nation's top-30 much of the year earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional held at Duke. It was Florida Atlantic's first postseason appearance since 2005 and an appearance they made good on with a first round win over Old Dominion. FAU concluded 2025 ranked No. 27.
The Owls opened the 2024 season with 11 straight wins behind the efforts of freshman Panna Bartha, who was also 11-0, and was later named the AAC Freshman of the year. The team finished their first campaign in the AAC with a 13-9 record and in the AAC quarterfinals. FAU's final in the CUSA 2023, the Owls recorded an 8-14 record and a quarterfinal finish. Alvarez guided the Owls to a 13-11 record and a CUSA semifinal finish after starting with the players in January.
Alvarez Teran has lived and competed all over the world, but most recently served as a coach for the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, a position she held from February of 2020 until June of 2021. She also served as the Tennis Director at Rock Pile Ranch in Montana as well as the captain of the Bolivian Billie Jean King Cup from July 2020 to present.
From January of 2019-Februay of 2020, Alvarez Teran served as the women’s director of tennis at Club e Tennis Santa Cruz, in Sana Cruz Bolivia.
In 2017 she served as the captain of the South American Games where she led the Bolivian team to as a silver medalist as both player and a coach. In the fall of 2017, Alvarez Teran was the Bolivian U12 National Team Captain for the Copa Cosat and the captain and coach of the U12 Girls National team, which finished fourth. She gained her first experience as a coach in 2016 when she began her career at the Las Palmas Country Club as the Head Women’s Coach.
Alvarez Teran holds certifications as an ITF Level 2 Coach, a PTR Professional 11 to 17, a PTR Junior Specialist, a PTR Instructor 10 and Under, USPTA Elite Professional, an ITPA Certified Tennis Performance Specialist and a GTPA Level B Coach.
She is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese and list the following accomplishments as a tennis player:
