Matt Iles joined the Owls in August 2020 as an assistant coach for the Florida Atlantic University men’s soccer team.
The men's soccer program relished quite a successful year in Iles' first season on staff despite having to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed fall sports to the spring. In the 2021 spring season, the team finished with a 6-4-2 record, marking the first winning season since 2007. The Owls also broke single-season school records in least amount of goals allowed (11) and lowest goals against average (0.92) in a single season, while posting four shutouts. FAU finished the league in fifth place with nine points and an RPI at No. 52, a school record.
With Iles' guidance, five different Owls were named with All-C-USA honors, including Ivan Mykhailenko (First Team), Alonso Coello Camarero (Second Team), Graeme Pratt (Second Team), Daniel Skistad (Third Team) and Vasilis Spinos (Freshman Team). Mykhailenko was also the C-USA Co-Golden Boot Award winner for tying for the most goals in C-USA play (5).
Iles made his way down to Boca Raton after a coaching stint and playing career at Keiser University. Previously, Iles served two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Seahawks, where the team posted back-to-back winning seasons. In Iles’ second year on the coaching staff, Keiser won the 2019 Sun Conference Championship with a 5-0 shutout over Johnson & Wales and punched a ticket to the NAIA National Tournament.
A three-year member on Keiser’s soccer team, Iles played as a midfielder/defender. Iles appeared in 38 games, tallying four assists, including three during his senior season. In 2017, Iles recorded a career-best two assists against Florida Memorial. Prior to his stint at Keiser, Iles played his first collegiate season at Midland University, where he appeared in 17 games and gathered eight starts.
Iles graduated from Keiser in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and most recently attained his Master of Business Administration. Iles is from Cardiff, Wales.
