For 21 seasons, Kevin Cooney manned the dugout for the Florida Atlantic baseball program. He compiled a record of 750-480-5 at FAU. His 1999 squad tied an NCAA record with 34-consecutive victories and was the first FAU team to advance to a NCAA Division I Regional. FAU baseball was also the first member of the Atlantic Sun Conference to be ranked in the Top 10 in every national poll. In 2002, he guided the Owls to a regional championship and Super Regional appearance, defeating No. 3-ranked Alabama in the regional. While the team competed in the A-Sun under Cooney, they won two-regular season titles and one postseason championship, advancing to seven NCAA regionals. The 2007 season was the team's first as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, and they finished the year with a record of 36-22. Cooney pitched at Montclair State and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1972. After being forced to retire due to a shoulder injury, he became assistant coach at Montclair State and was eventually head coach of the team for four seasons before coming to FAU. As a head coach, he amassed 888 wins. Thirteen FAU baseball players earned All-American honors while 81 have continued baseball among the professional ranks.
