Director of Student Athlete Center for Academic Excellence
Dr. Michael Allen joined the Owls in July of 2002 with the charge of spearheading an academic and student life program that enhances the ability of student-athletes to strike a healthy balance between their academic, athletic, and personal collegiate endeavors. Reporting to the Dean for Undergraduate Education, Allen oversees the academic counseling and life skills staff, and serves as a liaison between the athletic and academic communities at FAU. Allen?s objective is to ensure that every student-athlete has the resources and support structure in place to reach their educational goals.
Allen came to FAU from the University of Connecticut where he worked in the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes since 1993. Throughout his tenure at UConn he served as a counselor and advisor for several teams, taught NCAA sponsored ?Life Skills? courses and was the tutorial coordinator for the program. Allen also was instrumental in helping shape the NCAA eligibility certification system at UConn, and building a career development program for student-athletes. Most recently, Allen worked as the Football Program Director where he coordinated all aspects of support for members of the football team.
Allen is a Connecticut native who earned his undergraduate degree from Trinity College in Hartford, CT where he majored in sociology and was a four-year letter winner and co-captain of the basketball team. He obtained his M.A. in Sport Management from the University of Connecticut and his Ph.D. from the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut in 1997. His area of study was the Sociology of Sport with three particular areas of specialization: (1) the academic development of intercollegiate athletes, (2) educational leadership and (3) counseling psychology. Allen?s dissertation was entitled: ?The academic socialization of intercollegiate student-athletes: An examination of team subculture influences on academic achievement.? He has several publications and professional presentations relating to student-athlete development and academic enhancement.
Allen, his wife Beth, and daughter Maya reside in Boca Raton.
