Florida Atlantic University's student athletes spent the day before Thanksgiving gathering food for the less fortunate. Each team sponsored one family's Thanksgiving dinner by bringing food to the campus where it was loaded into vans and taken for distribution.
The organization of the day's events was coordinated by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which spearheaded by volleyball player Ashley Bodily and softball player Kim Nicosia.
A year ago, the volleyball team spent Thanksgiving at a local soup kitchen. This year the idea expanded to every team and to reach more families.
"I think it is important for our student athletes to realize how fortunate we are," said Alex Smolka, FAU's Assistant Athletic Director for Student Life. "The entire project was organized and carried out by the student athletes. It is a credit to the individual team leaders that we had more than enough food and that there will be several families who will now enjoy Thanksgiving. Families that otherwise may not have had a been able to do so."
