Do you want to know what we are talking about? Well, we've got just about the best promoter there is working with us and our players to make FAU and the OWLS a household name with a golden reputation.
If you haven't heard of Dick Berg, just wait. He is working brilliantly to not only "advertise" our players, our team, and thus our school, but to bring back the "love affair" between the fans, the players, and the community that used to be interwoven with college and pro sports. He recalls a time when the public felt as if they had a friend in the athletes who played at the higher levels. Since he grew up on the fringes of that, he knows exactly the kind of relationship the community and the fans want with the athletes they watch and support. When that relationship is created, they will stick with their team through thick and thin, just like they will with their own friend, and that is what he is banking on to make FAU's football program a success all around. We want our sports heroes to be approachable and to bring joy to the fans.
A detailed community involvement program is being put in place to make this happen. A group of fans, which are labeled "ambassadors", has been formed to take our players to the people, so to speak. At the present time, there are about forty communities and ten ambassadors involved. The campaign is encompassing Broward and Palm Beach counties and reaching out to the communities there and beyond. We are doing that by setting up ticket outlets at a variety of "mom and pop" stores, where the proprietor is willing, able, and ready to talk about FAU and coach Schnellenberger. Why would the customer be inquiring about FAU, when they come in? Because a large, brightly colored, countertop display of Coach Schnellenberger that says, " FAU FOOTBALL 2004, "Schnellenberger football is back!" After having a conversation about our football team, with the proprietors, who are big fans themselves, the customer can actually purchase their tickets there! How convenient! Look for these displays in places like, pizza parlors, sports bars, barber shops and hardware stores.
Even more exciting is the way that the Owls are getting involved with the youth in the community. "Fighting Owls" youth clubs targeting kids around the ages of 10 to 13 years old are being formed also. Of course these kids will greatly benefit from forming a relationship with our players, and will appreciate getting to know their local heroes. We definitely need more positive influences for them to look up to! Furthermore, before each game two athletes will go in to each community and take a "hands-on" approach to creating that relationship with their fans, through various activities and events.
We are dipping in to all parts of the community to create that lasting relationship with the people! Dick Berg is the man behind this, so when you put on your shades and walk in to a sold out stadium, he is the man to thank!
