Question from Rex Knofsky: What is the role of an SWA at FAU and what parts of your job do you like the best.
A: I would first like to clarify that the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) title is just that- a title. According to the NCAA's definition, the SWA is simply the highest ranking female administrator involved with the conduct of an athletics department. Because of this, most SWA's have a second title that more accurately defines their role within the department. At FAU, I am the Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs. In this capacity, I oversee the internal components of the department which include the training room, weight room and game operations. In addition, I am responsible for the oversight of a number of our athletic teams. And for the purposes of gender equity, I perform a yearly evaluation of the departments compliance with Title IX and make recommendations for adjustments.
Question from Carrie Maas: I know you came from Florida State, what are some similarities and differences?
A: Florida State University is a power in Division I athletics. It is a long term goal of our department to operate at this level. In order to do so, our new AD will work with the staff and the University President to develop a strategic plan that will provide intermediate steps to assist in our quest to accomplish this goal. The important thing to remember is that every highly successful Division I school started somewhere. I invite and encourage each of you to join us on this journey. There are great things to come at FAU!
