Boca Raton, FL - Mike Short, Florida Atlantic University's Athletic Equipment Manager, has earned the distinction from his peers as the South Region Equipment Manager of the Year. The honor was bestowed just four years after Short built a football equipment room from scratch and facilitated the needs of the team and staff in its record setting season and no. 4 national finish.
Short received the award from the Athletic Equipment Managers Association at the National Convention held in Kansas City.
Michael Short joined FAU Football in the fall of 2000 and was instrumental in the purchase of all equipment and the layout of the Tom Oxley Center's Equipment Room.
Short first met Coach Schnellenberger after he transferred from the University of Georgia and became a student manager at the University of Miami, where Schnellenberger was coaching.
Short's 23-year relationship with UM (1977-2000) saw him develop professionally from a student manager to the university's equipment manager, a position he held from 1987 to 2000. He is one of a handful who experienced the team's rise from near extinction to the '80's dominance, to the fall of the early 90's and its return to power in 1999.
Short has published two articles on equipment management I Athletic Business. He has also served as a speaker at three AEMA (Athletic Equipment Managers Association) conventions on shoulder pad fitting. He is a frequent speaker at high schools throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The Miami native has one daughter Kirsten Leigh (10).
