BOCA RATON, FL -- The search for Florida Atlantic University's athletics director has moved closer to completion, as the pool of nearly ninety candidates was reduced to seven by FAU's 13-member athletics director search committee.
"We had an extraordinarily talented and competitive applicant pool," said Dr. Dorothy Leland, chair of the athletics director search committee and vice president of FAU's Boca Raton campus. "This is an attractive opportunity, and we are confident that FAU will soon have a talented and dynamic new director of intercollegiate athletics."
The candidates are:
Craig Angelos - deputy director of athletics, Indiana University. Angelos, who earned a juris doctorate from Creighton University School of Law in Nebraska, has been with Indiana University for the past year and half. Previously, he served as the senior associate athletics director at the University of Miami.
Dean Billick - deputy director of athletics, University of Cincinnati. Billick, who earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Pennsylvania State University, has worked in a university setting for nearly 40 years. Prior to becoming the deputy director of athletics at UC, Billick served as the athletics director at Lamar University in Texas.
Thomas Collins - senior associate athletic director, Arizona State University. With more than 20 years of administrative experience in Division IA intercollegiate athletics, Collins has served in Arizona State's athletics department since 1985. Previously, Collins worked as an assistant athletics director at the University of Miami and earned a bachelor of arts in liberal studies from Northern Arizona University.
Timothy Fitzpatrick - chief operating officer/associate athletic director, U.S. Military Academy, West Point. A graduate of Ohio University, where he earned a master of sports administration and facility management, Fitzpatrick has served as the COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy for four years. Previously, Fitzpatrick has worked in the athletics departments for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of North Texas.
Dr. Lee McElroy - director of athletics, SUNY at Albany. McElroy, who has served as an athletics director at several universities over the past 15 years, earned a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Houston. He is chair of NACDA's Sears Cup committee and a member of the NCAA Management Council.
Dan Radakovich - senior associate athletics director, Louisiana State University. Radakovich earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Miami. Prior to joining Louisiana State two years ago, he served as the athletics director at American University in Washington, D.C.
Barbara Sparks-McGlinchy - senior associate athletics director, University of South Florida. With USF for nearly 30 years, Sparks-McGlinchy has served in the university's athletics department as a business manager, assistant and associate athletics director. Sparks-McGlinchy earned a master of arts in guidance and counselor education at USF.
FAU's new athletics director will be responsible for the university's intercollegiate athletics program, which consists of 18 men's and women's sports. In addition, the new athletics director will be charged with ensuring compliance with the NCAA and Atlantic Sun Conference rules and regulations, promote student-athlete success and provide leadership for external fundraising.
The athletics search committee will meet again next week to interview the candidates. Each candidate will attend a separate reception at the Oxley Center which will be open to the public and media. The reception schedule will be from 5:00pm - 6:30pm on June 4, June 9, June 16, June 19, and June 23. Dates and times for the remaining two receptions will be announced at a later date. The selection of FAU's new athletics director should take place by early July.
