Upcoming Event: Men's Golf versus American Conference Championship on April 27, 2026

May 20, 2003
Boca Raton -
Florida Atlantic University joined the then Trans America Athletic Conference, currently the Atlantic Sun Conference in 1993-94 as the nation's newest NCAA Division I member. Just nine years later, the Lady Owls finished a program-high second in the conference all-sports race while the men finished fifth.
The Lady Owl teams that scored in the race were cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, women's tennis, softball, golf and track. The soccer team was the first team of the year to garner top points by sharing the regular-season title. The tennis team captured the university's first women's tennis title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament and marked the second team to earn top honors. Softball ended the year by capturing its seventh conference title and making its fifth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and marked the third FAU women's team to hold the A-Sun Champion banner in 2002-03.
While those three played a significant role in points earned, the biggest difference for FAU in the 2002-03 all-sports race was the improvements made on the golf and track fronts. FAU finished tenth in the race in 1993-94 and moved as high as fourth in 1999-2000, but without receiving points for track and field, the race was out of reach. Track was added in 2000 and the women's golf team has improved their point total by more than 15 points.
In a year that saw conference leader Central Florida set a new record for total points with 253.5 points, just 12.5 more than FAU, the Lady Owls bettered their 2001-02 mark by 55 points, moving from 186 a year ago to 241 in 2002-03.
The men's race was tight once again. Central Florida captured the title with 160.5 points. The race won by the Golden Knights included just one conference championship but saw the school finish high in nearly every sport. FAU's lone men's conference title was won by the baseball team. The baseball championship credited the Owls with 36 of the program's 120 points, and it is the second time the team has won the baseball championship. The first came in 1999.
