For the second straight year, Florida Atlantic University's men's tennis team is the no. 1 seed at the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship. The Owls are coming off their best regular season ever with 18 wins against only four losses. Meanwhile, on the women's side, FAU enters the TAAC Championship with a no. 4 seed.
Behind head coach Mike Wheelen, the men's team helped secure the top-seed with an impressive 6-0 mark against TAAC competition. In all, FAU outscored its conference opposition by a combined 40-2. The regular season included a 10-match winning streak and an ITA ranking as high as 49. Most recently, the team upset no. 35 Rice University, 4-1, last Saturday to close out the regular season. The Owls are seeking their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament after earning an at-large berth last season.
The women's team completed it's first winning season (11-10) in four years behind first year associate head coach Caroline Hora. In the midst of the 2001 campaign, the women strung together an FAU Division I record six consecutive victories. The team also features returning TAAC Player-of-the-Year Kristen Jordan who sports a 30-4 record, 19-2 at no. 1 singles, and a no. 72 national ranking.
The TAAC Championship gets underway Thursday in Macon, GA with the 7-10 seeds competing on both the men's and women's sides. The FAU men will begin play Friday with a 9:00am match against the winner of Thursday's Jacksonville State/Samford match. The FAU women will take on Stetson Friday at 4:00pm. The tournament runs through Sunday with the winners receiving automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
