Milaneze and Laskowski Named Student Athletes of the Year

BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University held its annual Honors Convocation recognizing faculty and students who have excelled in their areas of interest, Wednesday afternoon. Giovanna Milaneze a two-year member of the Owls' volleyball team earned several awards including being named the 2003-2004 Female Scholar Athlete. Chris Laskowski, a four-year member of the FAU football team garnered the Male Scholar Athlete award.

Milaneze, an International Business major, has maintained a perfect 4.0 g.p.a through four years of college. She earned Region 3 Academic All-America honors and finished her senior campaign with a .170 hitting .170 hitting percentage, a 1.37 kill per game and was fourth on the team in blocks with 35. She also recorded 16 service aces. Despite the obvious time spent maintaining a perfect g.p.a. and the time devoted to her team, Milaneze has been involved in the Boca Raton community working with Calvary Chapel and various duties such as outreach events and caf? after services, Volleyball Head Coach at Club 4U (West Palm Beach), Volleyball Mentor at Palm Beach Community College Clinics, Volleyball-related activities at Florida Atlantic University including Summer Camps and YMCA Recreation, Cloverleaf tournament organization including various duties such as set up and gathering of donations, Church-related activities such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Outreach Projects, Fellowship of Christian Athletes Promotion, Special Olympics Housing Assistant, Special Olympics Swimming Referee.

"Giovanna has been an integral part of our team's success both on the court and in the classroom," said head coach Jody Brown. "She was one of our top attackers last season and was also one of our most solid performers throughout the year."

Laskowski is in his eighth semester at FAU as a History major. The senior academically and junior athletically has a 3.42 g.p.a. and is a two-time FAU MVP. Statistically, he has played in every game during the program's three year history and has finished one or two in tackles the last two seasons. He posted 93 total tackles, including 51 solo in 2003, a year that saw his leadership guide the team to an 11-3 record and a no. 4 season ending ranking.

Laskowski is a member of the SAAC committee, participated in the holiday party for underprivileged children, volunteer at Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, participating in upcoming relay for life fundraiser, student representative on President's Athletic Advisory Board. Worked on habitat house and has volunteered to mentor youth, and volunteered in the NCAA "Yes" program for two years by putting on a youth football clinic in our area.

"Chris has been an outstanding leader for the football squad both on and off the field," said Schnellenberger. "He has been selected as a team MVP for his leadership abilities and the example that he sets, and for his athletic accomplishments. Chris also has won the Iron Award for his outstanding efforts in the off-season training program. He is a true leader that sets a standard for all members of our team by his exemplary performance and behavior."

The recipients were nominated by their head coaches and were selected after being voted upon by the Athletic Department Head Coaches and Administrators and were required to have a minimum g.p.a. of 3.2.
