BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's student-athletes have become a common site at local Boys & Girls clubs over the past week.
In celebration of National Girl's and Women's in Sports Day, several FAU female student-athletes traveled to the Florence DeGeorge Unit of the Boys & Girls Club Wednesday afternoon. Meanwhile, the West Palm Beach Boy's and Girl's club got a special visit from the Owls' men's basketball team late last week.
On National Girls and Women's in Sports Day "Fair Play" was the central theme. In the spirit of the day, members of the Boys & Girls clubs from all of Broward County researched and presented reports to the FAU student-athletes. In turn, the student athletes spoke about the importance of females in sports.
Women's soccer coach Brian Dooley commented on the importance of interaction between student-athletes and community youth.
"Creating role models for young girls to build an attachment to, provides an example to what a future in athletics can bring to them," Dooley said.
In West Palm Beach, head coach Sidney Green was joined by his assistants and several members of the squad on the visit. The Owls offered a free clinic to 96 enthusiastic attendees related to the fundamentals of the game of basketball. After the clinic, the team signed autographs.
