DENTON, Texas. – The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team narrowly lost to the North Texas Mean Green by a score of 73-72 on Sunday afternoon.
The Owls (15-13, 7-8) faced the Mean Green (16-12, 6-8) for the first time this season, in what was a seesaw effort for the majority of the game. FAU and North Texas were tied 12 times, while the game saw 23 lead changes over the 40 minutes.
FIRST HALF
Sophomore guard
Isaiah Elohim got the scoring started for FAU, connecting on a triple in the Owls' first possession. Florida Atlantic leaned on redshirt junior guard
Niccolo Moretti to help find an offensive rhythm. Moretti finished the first half with five assists, while committing zero turnovers.
In the last 90 seconds of the first half, FAU went on a 6-0 run to close, finished off by a fastbreak layup by
Devin Williams. The Owls would go into halftime ahead 34-32.
SECOND HALF
FAU opened the second half with back-to-back layups by Williams and freshman
Josiah Parker, but the Mean Green would go on a 7-0 scoring run to regain the lead.
Both teams got things going offensively in the middle portion of the half with the Owls converting on eight of their last nine field goals, taking a three-point lead and forcing a North Texas timeout.
The back-and-forth affair continued with neither team taking a lead larger than three over the last five minutes.
Yohann Sissoko drove into the lane, connecting on a layup via goaltending to give FAU a two-point lead with 25 seconds remaining. It was two Mean Green free throws that put them over the edge, with the Owls unable to convert on either of their two final chances.
