ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic volleyball team wrapped up play in the UCF Invitational on Saturday, falling in a four-set battle to the UCF Knights, 3-1, at the Venue.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCF scored first, but an Owl block and a kill from
Erin Morrissey put Florida Atlantic up 2-1. The Knights went on a 7-5 run to lead 9-6, but a 4-0 Owl run pushed Florida Atlantic back in front, 10-9. Florida Atlantic and UCF battled back and forth through 5 lead changes as the Owls called their first timeout of the match with UCF holding the slight 19-18 advantage. The Knights maintained the lead through a 22-20 advantage, forcing another timeout from the Owls, but a kill from
Maggie Allred and a UCF error brought the Owls even at 22-22. However, despite tying things up at 22, the Owls just couldn't gain the edge as the Knights closed the set on a 3-1 run to take the first, 25-23, and the opening lead, 1-0.
The Owls held the early lead in the second, holding a 3-2 advantage following a kill from
Kierstin Bevelle. However, UCF went on a 9-1 run to spark a pair of timeouts from the Owls as the Knights took an 11-4 lead. The Owls struggled to cut into the Knights' lead in the second as UCF eventually took the second 25-11 and a two-set lead, 2-0.
Florida Atlantic opened the third on a 4-2 run, but UCF answered back with a 10-1 run of their own, sparking a pair of timeouts for the Owls as they trailed 12-5. The Knights continued to lead by seven through 17-10. However, the Owls battled back to cut the deficit to three off a 4-0 run, 17-14, to force UCF to call its first timeout of the third. Out of the break, the Owls produced a 6-4 run to battle back within one, 21-20, and spark the Knights' second and final timeout of the set. FAU continued its momentum out of the timeout, scoring four unanswered to hold set point at 24-21. The Knights responded with a 4-0 run of their own to hold a set point of their own at 25-24, but the Owls would not go down easy, closing the third on a 4-1 run to complete the rally, 28-26, and force a fourth, 2-1.
After battling through a 3-3 tie, the Knights scored 11 unanswered to break away to a 14-3 lead in the fourth. The Owls struggled to battle back in the set as UCF eventually held set point at 24-12. FAU rallied to score four unanswered, 24-16, but it was just too little too late as the Knights concluded the fourth with a kill, 25-16, to close out the four-set battle, 3-1.
