BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic volleyball team wrapped up preseason play on Saturday, taking a four-set win over Miami Dade, 4-0, inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls battled back and forth in the opening set. FAU held a 21-19 advantage following a Miami Dade timeout, however, the Sharks rallied to score three unanswered, taking a 22-21 advantage and sparking an Owls timeout. The Sharks held two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but the Owls battled back to eventually take the opening frame 28-26. Florida Atlantic opened the second on an 11-8 run. Miami Dade brought things even at 13-13, but the Owls didn't relinquish the momentum, rallying to outscore the Sharks 12-5 and take set two, 25-18. Miami Dade held an advantage early in the third, leading 10-7, but FAU went on a 5-2 run to tie things up at 12. Following an 18-18 tie, the Owls dominated the remainder of the third as they closed out the set on a 7-1 run to take the 25-19 win and 3-0 lead. The match went to extra sets as the teams played into a fourth. After an 8-8 tie, Miami Dade produced a 7-2 run to lead 15-10 as the Owls called a timeout. Florida Atlantic battled back within two, 16-14, after a 4-1 run to force Miami Dade to call its first timeout of the fourth. The Sharks led 19-16, but a 3-0 run for FAU evened up the set at 19. Florida Atlantic went on a 5-2 run to hold set point at 24-21. The Sharks tried to rally, scoring back-to-back points to cut into the Owls' lead, 24-23, but a kill from Dyer closed things out as the Owls took the 25-23 win to close out the 4-0 victory.
FAU now sets its sights on its regular season opening weekend as the Owls get set to host the Florida Atlantic Invitational against Kent State, Texas Tech, and Western Carolina on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29-30. The Owls' regular-season opener is on Friday, Aug. 29, at 12 p.m. vs. Kent State.
