Newcomer Duo of Lara Smejkal and Malwina Rowinska Close Out at No. 55
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team tallied numerous firsts in a record-breaking season that concluded with a No. 27 team rank and a No. 55 ranking by the doubles team of Lara Smejkal and Malwina Rowinska.
The Owls were the only team in the nation to complete the regular season undefeated and ran that total to 16-0 before falling in the semifinal of the American Athletic Conference Championship. The squad earned the invite to the NCAA Tournament, the first FAU women's tennis team to do so since 2005. FAU defeated former conference foe Old Dominion in the first round but fell to the No. 8 seed and NCAA Tournament host Duke in the following round.
At No. 27, the rank is the highest in program history and marks the second consecutive season to end the year among the nation's elite, an accomplishment matched only three times prior, and the first time in back-to-back years under the direction of Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's director of tennis, who assumed the helm in the spring of 2022.
For the first time in program history, every singles court was held by a player that tallied double digit wins. Rowinska led the way with a 16-4 record and a 15-1 record in dual match play. Senior Lexi Silna ended her final dual match season with a 12-2 mark while fellow senior Millie-Mae Matthews concluded her fourth year as an Owl with a 10-3 mark.
Doubles set the tone for the Owls all season. Once again, Rowinska led FAU with a 20-7 doubles record while she and Lara Smejkal worked together for a 15-3 dual match season and ended the year ranked No. 55 as a pair. They are the first doubles duo for FAU to hold a national ranking at the NCAA Division I level and the first duo to hold a national ranking since 1991-92.
