No. 29 Owls Remain Perfect, Run Winning Streak to a Program-Long 12
4/2/2025 11:11:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 29 Florida Atlantic women's tennis team used a 4-1 win over host Memphis on Wednesday evening to extend the program-long winning streak to 12 and remain the only team among NCAA Division I members that is still undefeated.
The match, which aired on ESPN+, was moved inside, the first indoor match for FAU this season, which eliminated the wind element, something the Owls have mastered as an advantage. But the surface didn't matter for a team that captured the doubles point and then the first three of four singles matches to clinch the win.
Newcomers Malwina Rowinska and Lara Smejkal ran their doubles record to 10-1 with a court one victory while veterans Millie-Mae Matthews and Victoria Gomez O'Hayon were the other half of the doubles' winning effort. That duo is 9-3 on the year. Holding a 1-0 lead, the 12-0 Owls moved into singles play versus a 6-12 team that has big wins of their own over No. 67 Wichita State and No. 22 Clemson.
Florida Atlantic found it's Wednesday heroes on courts six where senior Matthews gave the Owls their first singles' point and a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Matthews is 6-1 as a senior in dual matches. The Owls dropped court two and saw courts one and five move to three sets putting pressure on courts three and four and both cashed in for wins to clinch an Owls victory. Rowinska held off a late charge with a 6-4, 6-4 win inching FAU within one point of the win. She is 10-1 on the year the first to reach the double-digit plateau. Moments later, Lara Smejkal's match was pushed to an extra game in both sets but the freshman prevailed with a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) match clinching win,
