Owls Stun FIU Again

MIAMI, Fla. – In a torrential downpour on Sunday night in Miami, Florida Atlantic men's soccer (5-4-3, 2-2-1 AAC) came from behind to defeat FIU 2-1 and vault up the American Conference standings.
The two South Florida rivals played out a chippy first half that saw coincidental red cards handed out in the 31st minute. The final 70 minutes were played 10 versus 10.
The match opened up in the second half with chances at both ends. The Owls thought they'd scored the game's first goal off a free kick, but the official said the FIU goalkeeper was fouled on the play, and the goal was waived off.
FIU officially took the lead in the 73rd minute. A failed clearance by the Owls resulted in three shot attempts for the Panthers, the third of which found the back of the net.
The Owls would equalize eight minutes later from the penalty spot. From a corner kick, Callum Frogson chased down the loose ball to the edge of the box. The junior was tripped and went down, prompting the official to point to the spot. After a VAR check, the foul was confirmed. Arthur Widiez stepped up and converted the PK to tie the match at 1-1.
Not content with splitting the points, the Owls continued to press. In the 83rd minute, they stunned the raucous FIU crowd for the second straight season. Aboubacar Traore outran the FIU defender to the end line and sent a cross through the six-yard box. It fell perfectly to Matthew Alfred, who slotted it into the far corner for his first goal as an Owl and the eventual game-winner.
The shot count finished even at five for each team. Goalkeeper Francisco Ranieri finished with four saves. There were 26 fouls, six yellow cards, and two reds.
The victory moved the Owls to seven points in the league standings, two points behind USF for third place.

What's Next
The Owls will complete the suspended Stetson match from August 29 on Tuesday at 4 p.m. They'll head to Memphis next Saturday for their penultimate AAC match of the season.Follow Us
