Owls Season Comes to a Close Against SMU in AAC Tournament Semifinals

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's soccer team's 2023 season came to a close on Thursday, as the Owls fell 3-0 against SMU in the 2023 AAC Championship semifinals in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. The Owls finish with an overall record of 8-7-5.
The Mustangs took the lead with two minutes in the match. In the eighth minute, SMU took a penalty kick to extend their lead 2-0. Going into the half the Owls were trailing two nil. With ten minutes remaining in the match, the Mustangs scored again to eventually close out the 3-0 contest.
Goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez recorded three saves on the night, she is now at 103 career saves and now ranks tenth all-time in saves at Florida Atlantic. The three seniors Heather Squitieri, Mia Sennes, and Molly Setsma each registered minutes tonight. Squitieri played a total of 128 minutes this season. Sennes has started the last six games for Florida Atlantic, in her career as an Owl she registered 2,878 minutes. Setsma registered a total of 2,833 as an Owl. On Tuesday evening against USF, she scored the game-winner to advance to the AAC Championship semifinals. The goal on Tuesday evening recorded a new career-high for the senior. She was named AAC Weekly Honor Roll recipient the week of October 9.
Sophomore Elin Simonardottir was the leading goal scorer (5) for Florida Atlantic. In conference play, Sofia Voldby led the Owls with three goals. Voldby was named AAC Weekly Honor Roll twice throughout the regular season. Forward Michelle Horan led in assists as she finished with five on the season. Behind Horan was freshman Olivia Bori with four assists on the year, Bori was also named one of the AAC Rookie of the Year honorees.
The Owls close out their first season in the American Athletic Conference as the seventh seed in the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship tournament.
