BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team is one of the oldest programs at the school, and after getting off an unprecedented 2021 spring season, the squad is ready to begin the program's 42nd season. Coach
Joey Worthen is in his fifth season at the helm, turning around the team from a two-win program to a winning one in a short amount of time. Here is everything you need to know about the fall 2021 team.
- The fall 2021 team returns all 11 starters from the spring season
- Of those 11 returning starters, All-Conference-USA performers Ivan Mykhailenko, Alonso Coello Camarero, Graeme Pratt, Daniel Skistad and Vasilis Spinos will be huge contributors to the team's success. Coello Camarero and Mykhailenko were chosen on the Fall 2021 C-USA Men's Soccer Preseason Team
- Goalkeeper Neil Strauber returns to the pitch after having started in all 12 matches in the spring
- This year's squad can be boasted as one of the most experienced in the conference with five four-year players and six players entering their third year
- The team welcomes nine newcomers and did not lose any key players due to graduation
- Fifteen different countries are represented on the squad
- The team is coming off the spring having achieved a 6-4-2 record, marking the first winning season for the program since 2007
- Last spring's team broke school records for least amount of goals conceded (11) and lowest goals against average (0.92)
- As mentioned previously, five student-athletes were recognized by the conference at the end of the season. Mykhailenko earned First Team recognition as a forward, as well as the C-USA Co-Golden Boot Award for tying for the most goals in the conference
- Captains Pratt and Coello Camarero made spots on the Second Team as a defender and midfielder, respectively. Coello Camarero became an All-Conference selection for the third straight season
- Skistad received Third Team honors as a defender, while fellow backline member Spinos was an All-Freshman honoree
- FAU tallied a 3-0-2 record in non-conference play, marking the best defensive start for the program in the first five matches since 1991
- The Owls tallied four shutouts last season
- Strauber was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week and College Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week during the season. Mykhailenko earned C-USA Offensive Player of the Week twice after two-goal performances twice during the conference slate
- All returners saw at least 150 minutes on the pitch last season
- The contributors to the team's 13 goals in the spring are all returning, including the leading scorer in Mykhailenko
- The six players who added an assist last season are all on the 2021 fall roster
