BOCA RATON, Fla. – After just playing their last match just over four months ago to close the "2020" season – held this past spring – the 2021 campaign for the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team begins this Thursday night. The Owls will host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a match that will take place on Howard Schnellenberger Field inside FAU Stadium, the on-campus football facility.
This will be the fourth time the women have hosted a match in this venue, the last opening up the 2018 schedule. Thursday's 7 p.m. match will have free admission, and fans can enter into the stadium via Gate 1.
Owls' Spring in Review
The Owls finished the regular season with a 5-3-2 record, and a 4-1-1 mark in Conference USA, earning the No. 2 seed in the East Division. A quarterfinal loss wrapped up the team's spring slate, but nearly every contributor for the team returns, including five players who earned award notoriety, either from C-USA or on the All-Region level.
Stay tuned for more info on the Owls this week, as we will highlight the newcomers on Tuesday and returnees on Wednesday.
Owls' Opener in Preview
Oakland also had a 5-3-2 spring regular season record, playing only a conference schedule, and fell just short of qualifying for the reduced Horizon League Championship. Four Golden Grizzlies earned either All-League or All-Region honors; just like for FAU, all have returned.
Opponent History
These two teams have met twice, in 2016 and 2017 (the first in Boca Raton, the second in Rochester), with both results ending as double-overtime scoreless draws.
