Owls Take Care of Business, Advance at C-USA Championship

DENTON, Texas – The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team (9-6), the No. 5 seed, defeated No. 12 seed and host North Texas, 4-1, in the first round of the C-USA Championship on Thursday.

The Owls captured the doubles point with the first victory on court No. 1, which featured the duo of Martina Kudelova and Radka Buzkova. With the doubles score tied at 1-1, the team of May Kimhi and Katerina Filip secured a 7-6 (7-5) victory on court No. 3 to put FAU up 1-0 heading into singles play.

Buzkova was the first to complete her singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court No. 4. The Owls then dropped court No. 2, allowing UNT (6-13) to pull within one at 2-1. Kudelova won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 on court No. 1. Senior Natalie Kallmunzerova clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court No. 5.

Wheelen's Wisdom

"Playing the home team first round was not an issue," said Caroline Wheelen, FAU's head coach. "We have done more mental work this year than in past years. Tennis is 50% mental, so we weren't bothered at all and made light work of the match. I'm very confident in our lineup in any tournament matchup."
