Huempfner Impresses at ITA Gridiron Classic

FAU junior captures doubles title and advances to championship of his singles flight
BOCA RATON, Fla. – A group of Florida Atlantic University veteran tennis players opened the 2021-22 tennis season last weekend at the Mercer University Gridiron Classic, an ITA event, with strong results and solid performances to build upon.
Junior Kevin Huempfner led the Owls with an appearance in the singles finals. The Germany native teamed with fellow countryman Finn Stodder to capture the doubles championship.
"I am pleased with our play last weekend. I am definitely seeing improvement in many areas. Our fitness is what I'm most impressed with. This is one thing we've been putting our preseason emphasis on. We need to continue to clean up a few things in our games, but overall we had a solid start to our fall season.
"A shoutout to Kevin for making the finals of the A draw and for winning the doubles tournament, along with Finn, who also came in second place in his singles draw. And another shoutout to Hunter [Robbins] and Carles [Sarrio] for beating a pair of ranked opponents in doubles.
"I am also extremely happy with Nico [Nicolas Jadoun] and Gabe [Gabriel Diaz] for picking up their first set of wins this fall. Nico won a total of three matches to win the backdraw in singles play, while Gabe won two out of four singles matches.
"We are making improvements, and this is what it's all about."
