BOCA RATON --Â FAU's opening series in Conference USA with Middle Tennessee State University was postponed this weekend, due to Covid-19 issues in the Blue Raiders' program. With a weekend series at Old Dominion scheduled for Jan. 8-9, the Owls have added a contest at James Madison University on Tuesday, giving FAU a week-long Virginia road trip.Â
FAU enters the contest with an overall record of 5-3, while the Dukes are 3-4 overall after an 80-73 loss to Morgan State Sunday evening.
James Madison and Florida Atlantic have only met on the hardwood three times, with the Dukes holding a 3-0 edge. The last meeting was part of the 2008 NIT Preseason Tip-Off in Davidson, N.C., with JMU taking a 10-point victory. The two teams have only squared off in Harrisonburg once prior, all the way back in 2002.
Mark Byington is in his first season leading the Dukes' program. He previously served as head coach at Georgia Southern. Under
Dusty May, the Owls took on Byington's Georgia Southern team early in the 2018-19 season, with the Eagles taking the victory.Â
Â
FAU is coming off back-to-back winning seasons, the first time the Owls have accomplished that feat since 2007 (under Matt Doherty and Rex Walters).
Dusty May is the first FAU head coach to lead a team to the front and back end of consecutive winning seasons since 1992, when Tim Loomis coached the Owls to three straight seasons with a winning percentage above .500. More wins than losses in 2020-21 would make May just the second (along with Loomis) to lead FAU to three straight winning seasons. Both would have done it in their first three seasons, as well.
Â
Powered by three games over the century mark, the Owls are averaging 86.8 points per game and boast a scoring margin of +23.1. Both marks are No. 2 in C-USA, while the scoring margin is No. 13 nationally and the scoring offense is No. 21.
Â
Taking care of the basketball has become a hallmark of the Owls under
Dusty May. FAU ranked No. 2 in Conference USA in turnover margin last season at 1.81 fewer per game. They have started 2020-21 in similar fashion. FAU averages just 11.1 turnovers. The Owls' turnover margin is +7.3 per game this season. Both of the above averages are No. 1 in C-USA, while the turnover margin average is also No. 10 in the nation.
Â
Bryan Greenlee made 7 3-pointers in his Owl debut and has since added 14 more. He is currently the No. 5-ranked 3-point shooter in the nation (No. 1 in C-USA), converting at a .583 clip from behind the arc. Greenlee's average of 2.62 made 3-pointers per game is No. 5 in C-USA and No. 93 nationally.
Â
Jailyn Ingram has scored in double digits in five of his last six outings. He added 10 rebounds at North Florida to record his first double-double of the season and the ninth of his career. He is the most prolific current Owl in the category of double-doubles with nine in his career. Ingram has also joined an exclusive FAU club. In the season-opener, he became just the fourth Owl ever to score 1000 points and grab 500 rebounds.

The Owls open Conference USA action this weekend, traveling to face Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. The Monarchs are 5-3 on the season with non-conference victories over William & Mary, Norfolk State, Northeastern and Virginia Wesleyan. ODU's non-conference losses came to Maryland and VCU. ODU opened C-USA action with an 82-67 loss at FIU Friday. The Monarchs defeated the Panthers 71-66 Saturday.
Old Dominion holds a 9-3 advantage in the all-time series with FAU. But the Owls picked up a victory in the last meeting. FAU defeated the Monarchs 66-56 in what turned out to be their final game of last season on March 10, 2020 at the Conference USA Championship Tournament in Frisco, Texas. The Owls have only won once in Norfolk, with that lone victory coming during the 2016-17 season.
The Owls will play their only Thursday-Saturday series and the only home-and-home series of the C-USA season following the trip to ODU. FAU will face Florida International in Miami on Thurs., Jan. 14. The Panthers visit The Burrow on Sat., Jan. 16.Â
