BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's golf team improved mightily over the shortened 2019-20 season, posting its best-ever team scoring average (289.05) and its first top-100 Golfweek ranking. Coach
Ryan Jamison and his team hope to take another leap in 2020-21 through a more competitive schedule. Â
"I would be very grateful if we have the opportunity to play golf again and participating in these tournaments would be an unbelievable opportunity for our group of young guys," Jamison said. "This is the type of schedule that can put a team on the map."
The Owls tentatively begin their season with a pair of tournaments out west. They'll start at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Washington, competing Sept. 14-15 at the Golf Mountain Golf Club. Ten days later, FAU travels to Albuquerque for the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, a two-day tournament hosted by the University of New Mexico.
On Oct. 4, FAU starts the three-day Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas. Southern Methodist University will host the tournament at the Trinity Forest Golf Club. Less than a week after, on Oct. 12, the Owls head to Reno's Hidden Valley Country Club for the two-day Wolf Pack Classic hosted by the University of Nevada.
The final tournament of FAU's fall season is located a mere four-hour drive away from Boca Raton. Running Oct. 26-27, the team will compete at The 2020 Intercollegiate at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, Florida.
"Obviously, this is the strongest schedule we have ever had at FAU," Jamison said. "Quite frankly, not even close."
Like the fall, FAU begins the spring on the other end of the country. The Owls are slated to play in the three-day, University of Wyoming-hosted Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. Tournament play begins Feb. 19.Â
FAU gets a 10-day break before returning to play in a tournament that Loyola University-Maryland is hosting in its home county. On March 1-2, the team will compete in the 2021 Southern Invitational at The Falls Club in Palm Beach, Florida. The Owls then face a quick turnaround, to play in the 2021 Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. Running March 7-9, Auburn University is hosting the tournament at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama.
Jamison returns to his old stomping grounds on March 25. The Owls are competing in The Goodwin, a three-day tournament hosted by Stanford University on its home golf course. Jamison is more than familiar with the greens, as he coached the Cardinal from 2016-18 before coming to FAU.
FAU heads to Pearland, Texas for the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on April 12. The University of Houston is hosting the two-day tournament at the Golfcrest Country Club. The Owls then conclude the season in Texarkana, Arkansas for the Conference USA Championship. Stretching April 19-22, the tournament will be played on Texarkana Country Club's 6,929-yard course. FAU is seeking its first top-three finish since joining C-USA in 2013.
