BOCA RATON, Fla. – Claire Emslie, whose name is still littered across the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer record book, continued her successful professional career this past season, winning both the regular season and league titles with Melbourne City FC.
Emslie remains with of Orlando Pride of the National Women's Soccer League while on loan to Melbourne City, part of the top division soccer league in Australia, the W-League. With her most recent squad, the Scottish forward scored four goals in 10 league matches, ranking her third on the team and 10th in the league. She was a key contributor in helping the team defend their Premiership title with a remarkable undefeated regular season, going 11-0-1 with a 27-4 goal differential.
Â
In the postseason, Emslie notched the first goal in the team's 5-1 semifinal win over the Western Sydney Wanderers on March 14, and a week later, a 1-0 win over Sydney FC in the W-League Grand Final secured both trophies for the club. The championship was played behind closed doors due to the threat of coronavirus.
Â
Emslie spoke about her most recent accomplishments and what's to come:
Â
Q: What was it like playing in Australia for the first time and representing Melbourne City?
Emslie: "My first experience playing in Australia was amazing. I was lucky to play for such a talented, successful team that was made up of really good people. The girls were brilliant and we had lots of fun on and off the pitch. I love winning trophies and we enjoyed many adventures to some of the most beautiful beaches."
Â
Q: Describe playing in the W-League Grand Final, and winning the championship.
Emslie: "Winning the league title (premier plate) felt the best as it was won over the full season and every player in the squad played a huge part.
Â
"The grand final win had mixed emotions as it wasn't a very good game and the build-up was stressful. A lot of the stress was because of everything happening with the corona virus. It was great when the final whistle blew and we had won! But then I was rushing to catch a flight home that night to get home before countries went into lockdown."
Â
Q: How was playing arguably (one of) the last official game(s) internationally before everything closed down with the coronavirus?
"It made me appreciate getting to play a professional game in such a wonderful environment. Also, I knew it was the last one I'd play for a while."
Â
Q: What is next for you with the Orlando Pride and the Scottish Women's National Team?
Emslie: "Next up, once things settle after the virus, I will return to Orlando to play the NWSL season. Excited to get a full season there. For Scotland, we have European Qualifiers and I'm looking forward to see how we do moving through these tough games."
