BOCA RATON, Fla. – Gabi Cimino, part of the incoming class for the 2020 Florida Atlantic University women's soccer squad, has been chosen to play for the Puerto Rico as part of the national team's upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup Qualifiers.
Cimino, from Miami Springs, has made her way up the Puerto Rico national team ladder, as part of the U17 team, and previously in friendlies with the Senior Team. She will now suit up again for that latter squad for World Cup qualification matches that will be held from Feb. 22 to March 8. Cimino will join the team towards the qualifying process on Feb. 15.
"I am extremely excited I have been selected to be a part of this team," said Cimino. "I am so thankful I have the chance to make Puerto Rico proud! I know the competition will be tough, but I know I am up for the challenge. I am grateful to have new experiences with this team and country, and can't wait to see where this journey leads!"
"We are excited for Gabi and this opportunity to compete in the FIFA U20 World Cup Qualifiers with Puerto Rico," added FAU head coach
Patrick Baker. "She is a very talented young lady and Puerto Rico continues to make investments in her through training camps and games. I'm excited that she gets to represent her country in such a competitive event. For anyone to represent their country at a World Cup is special and the journey to get there is just as meaningful. We wish Gabi and her teammates the best in the upcoming camp and games."
Cimino is currently part of a class of six FAU newcomers that have been announced to this point. The group will arrive on campus this summer to join the returning Owl contingency for the 2020 fall campaign.
