BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer squad has elected two upperclassmen as team captains for the 2020 campaign, senior midfielder
Gi Krstec and junior defender
Hailey Landrus.
"I'm excited to announce our players have chosen
Gi Krstec and
Hailey Landrus to lead our women's soccer program in 2020," said head coach
Patrick Baker. "These two young ladies have wonderful individual stories and are committed to improving themselves, their teammates and the program overall. Gi and Hailey are both upperclassmen and have enjoyed back-to-back Conference USA regular season titles to start their FAU careers. They will serve as first-time captains and I'm excited to begin the upcoming 2020 journey with them as our leaders. Gi and Hailey truly reflect our 'Live Like Champions' culture and have so much to offer as people, students, soccer players and leaders. We are fortunate again to have quality young ladies leading our team in what could be another historic fall for FAU women's soccer."
This past season, the duo combined to start 34 matches and total over 2,500 minutes on the pitch in leading the Owls to a 15-4-2 overall mark and an 8-1-1 C-USA record and regular season title. For both, 2020 will be their third season with the program. Krstec transferred in as a sophomore and made a full return last year after an abbreviated first season cut short due to injury; Landrus has filled the role of outside back as a starter each of her freshman and sophomore seasons.
"I am honored being named as a team captain for 2020," said Krstec. "I will follow the same game plan as Jesse and Pernille (last year's captains,
Jessica Monteiro and
Pernille Velta), as they created a team with a family atmosphere and were extremely driven, which in turn made others strive to do their best. The FAU women's soccer team has had great success in the past, but there is still more out there for us to do. I will do my best to set an example and lead this team to that next level in 2020. We will work hard, stay close and we will achieve because we ALL believe!"
"I am so honored and humbled to be named one of the captains for the 2020 season," added Landrus. "I am very thankful towards my coaches and teammates for allowing me to have this great opportunity. The team is coming off of a very strong 2019 season, and I can't wait for us to accomplish even more this upcoming spring and into my junior fall season. Having being led by such great captains previously, I now hope that I can use what I learned from them to be a successful captain this year. I am so appreciative to have this role and can't wait for what lies ahead!"
The Owls and their two new captains are preparing to move into their 2020 spring schedule, which will be released soon here on FAUSports.com. The fall campaign will kick off in late August.
