BOCA RATON, Fla. - Sophomore forward Madiaw Niang is the subject of this week's summer feature story.
Â
Born in Senegal, Niang came to the United States for both academic and athletic reasons.
Â
"I came to the US to pursue my education and play basketball at the same time."
Â
While playing at DME Academy, FAU rose to the top of the Niang's list.
Â
"I talked to a lot of coaches during the recruiting process, but I felt most comfortable with Coach May," said Niang. "A lot of people talked about what a great guy he was and how (FAU) would be a good place for me."
Â
In his first year as an Owl, Niang played almost 15 minutes a game and recorded his first career double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) in an overtime win at Illinois.
Â
"Going through the learning process as a freshman, I didn't expect to play that much (last season). But with all the injuries, I took the opportunity to do as much as I could to help the team out."
Â
Niang is hoping to use last year's experience as a springboard for this coming season.
Â
"We went through a lot last year, we've been working hard in practice and the coaches have been helping us with the details."
Â
As a sophomore, Niang wants to fine tune his game.
"I want to get better at the little things and help my team as much as I can so that we can build a winning program." Â
