BOCA RATON, Fla. -Â Sophomore Michael Forrest is the focus of the newest update in the Summer Feature Series.
Â
Forrest is a local product, having led nearby Blanche Ely High School to two state titles. He also was named Broward County Player of the Year. Forrest said that FAU's proximity helped make the decision to become an Owl even easier.
Â
"I go home a lot," Forrest said with a laugh.
Â
Like most freshmen, Forrest initially struggled with adjusting to Division I basketball, but credits the coaching staff for their patience.
Â
"Coach May told me that I was going to have to grow up quickly," said Forrest. "But just being able to go out on the court, and learn from my mistakes made me better as a player."
Â
Forrest ended the year leading the team in assists in addition to averaging 8.5 points per game. He also got it done in the classroom, making the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Â
"The success we had last year gives me a lot of confidence for this year."
Â
With a year under his belt, Forrest is now helping bringing the newest Owls along.
Â
"Last summer, we were focused on creating a culture," noted Forrest. "This summer, we've been more focused on the details of the game.
Â
For the coming season, Forrest wants to help make an addition to the rafters of the Owls' home arena.
Â
"I want to hang a banner in here," said Forrest.
