Summer Feature Series: Richardson Maitre

BOCA RATON, Fla. - We continue our FAU men's basketball team feature story series by checking in with junior guard Richardson Maitre.
Life has been all about making adjustments for Maitre, who was born in Haiti, but moved to Canada at a young age. That experience has proven useful in his college career. As a freshman, Maitre helped Indian Hills Community College to a Region 11 title and led them to an NJCAA Tournament appearance. He suffered an injury that forced him to miss his sophomore season, but when talking to Head Coach Dusty May shortly after May was hired, Maitre was convinced that FAU was the right place for him.
"We talked about leaving a legacy, so that people at FAU know we were part of the group that built the foundation," said Maitre.
Getting back on the floor after a year off at a new school and with a new coach was difficult, but Maitre credits Coach May and his staff with letting him find his footing.
"(The transition) was tough, but the coaching staff understood that me coming from another school and not having played for a whole year that I had to get back in the rhythm."
Helping the Owls to their first winning season in eight years and just the third postseason appearance in school history, Maitre thinks that FAU in ready to do even better this year.
"The success we had last year helps a lot, especially with the returners. We all went through the same battles on the court. That sets the foundation for the incoming group, so that they don't have to start from scratch."
To help move that process along, when Maitre went home for part of the summer, he put the time to good use.
"I was working on my game, watching tapes and getting my craft better. I think I came with more leadership and more anger (that I could improve). Now I know what I have to do to help the team achieve our goals."
And what are those goals?
"I want to be better than last year and I want the team to win everything."
