It was a team effort for the Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team on Friday morning, defeating Pitt 4-0 to even their dual match record at 7-7.
Each of the doubles courts jumped out to an early lead only to see Pitt (4-9) battle back before succumbing to the doubles-point loss. FAU took the point and didn't look back as early leads were seen on courts 1, 3, 4 and 5. Again, Pitt responded, but it was not enough to shake a mentally-tough FAU team to take the 4-0 win.
"I am impressed with the way we played today," said Marcy Cava, FAU's head coach. "Pitt is a tough team, but we were tougher today. The energy of our players and fans was contagious and really fun to be part of. I'm very impressed with Martina, Natalie and May. They just started to play college tennis two months ago and they handled themselves like they are seniors."
Notable
May Kimhi and
Martina Kudelova moved to 3-1 as doubles partners, playing on court 2, with a 6-4 win. The duo was the first to come off the courts on Friday morning, quickly followed by
Jemi Aguilar and
Natalia Boltinskaya, who are on a two-match win streak, and tallied their sixth win of the season. The Owls secured the double point for the second consecutive match in less than 45 minutes
Kudelova, playing on court 1, jumped to an early singles lead and disposed of her Pitt opponent, 6-2, 6-1. The freshman is on a roll, dropping just three games in two matches and has won her last five
Kimhi put the Owls up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court 4
With battles brewing courts 2, 5 and 6, the attention turned to courts 2 and 3.
Natalia Boltinskaya won her first set and was up 4-3 in the second, but it was
Natalie Kallmunzerova on court 3. Kallmunzerova, who holds leads in nearly every match but rarely has the opportunity to finish, clinched the match for the Owls, 6-3, 6-3. With the win, the sophomore moved to 6-5 on the year
