BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer program has been honored with the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award by United Soccer Coaches, earning the organization's Silver Award recognition. The achievement is given to those teams "exhibiting fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game" during the 2018 season.
The Owls were the only Conference USA team recognized on any of the four levels, men or women, by United Soccer Coaches. They placed at the silver level, receiving just six cards – all yellow – in 21 matches. The full list of teams that were bestowed this honor can be found HERE, and the hierarchy for the award is as follows:
Teams honored at the platinum level went an entire season without a player or coach receiving a yellow card or red card. Teams honored at the gold (1-10%), silver (11-30%) and bronze (31-50%) levels are based on a percentage calculated by the total number of cards received by players/coaches divided by the team's total number of games played.
"We are honored that Florida Atlantic women's soccer has received the Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Silver Award recognition as a team for 2018," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "We competed hard last fall and enjoyed another impressive 12-win season. Our ladies ended up with no red cards and had just six yellows the whole year. It's nice to see United Soccer Coaches recognize this side of the game and it's good to see our team qualify for this level."
FAU's group of returnees, coming off a share of the 2018 Conference USA regular season championship, will begin a brief slate of spring matches in February. The 2019 squad will come together in the summer for the regular season opener, due in mid-August.
