BOCA RATON, Fla. – The day is here, Opening Night of the 2018 Florida Atlantic University women's soccer season, as the Owls host Miami at FAU Stadium at 7 p.m. For the final positional preview for this season's squad, FAUSports.com sat down with both Head Coach
Patrick Baker as well as the newest member of the staff,
Cameron Fertenbaugh, who deals directly with this group, the goalkeepers.
The last group, certainly not of the least importance, is made up of three netminders. For redshirt senior
Jennifer Ocampo, a team captain, it is her fifth year with the program.
Brianna Waggoner sat out last season as a redshirt, and joining the trio is first-year
Cassidy Wasdin.
- Returnees (2): Redshirt Senior Ocampo, Redshirt Freshman Waggoner
- Newcomers (1): Freshman Wasdin
- Lost (0)
Coach Fertenbaugh on the goalkeepers:
"Jenny and Bri show pretty good leadership and they've really kept the training environment standard really high. They're teaching Cass the ropes, about how to train, but it's still a competitive environment we're trying to create there. That will be beneficial for whoever ends up playing. They're very supportive of each other, but still push and demand a lot of each other. I'm excited to see them in a game and how they progress throughout the season."
Coach Baker on the group:
"I'm excited, for the first time in five years, to have three goalkeepers. Jenny is the most known, as a fifth-year senior. She patiently waited behind Sydney Drinkwater and had a very good first year as starter, we're looking forward to an even better second year. Her leadership, her composure, I think she can be one of the best in Conference USA by the end of the year. Bri is back for her second year, she had a very good spring, got valuable game minutes and additional training. She's worked hard over the summer, came back in great shape and is impacting training and games, it's exciting to see. Cassidy, as a very talented and heralded freshman goalkeeper, the nice thing is, as an incoming freshman, because of two experienced goalkeepers in front of her, she's doesn't have to be rushed. She can still get good reps, and we're able to slowly but appropriately bring her into the fold."
Jennifer Ocampo
- With this year's offseason appointment, is now a two-time team captain
- Set a program record last season with 1,939 minutes in goal, and was first in Conference USA with eight shutouts, while placing second with 96 saves
- Additionally, nine times, she allowed just one goal, and twice she was C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week
Coach Fertenbaugh: "Jenny is a strong leader, she leads not only our goalkeepers, but she leads the backline and the team as a whole as well. She's technically really strong; I'm just excited to see her play to be honest. Excited to see her in a game, to see how she responds, and how she plays throughout the season. I think she'll lead the team well, and we're expecting big things out of her."
Brianna Waggoner
- Utilized a redshirt season after a fantastic career at Oviedo High
- Led the Lions to back-to-back Class 5A state titles in 2016 and 2017, and a runner-up finish in 2015
- Also paced the squad to two district and two conference titles, was her team's Defensive MVP and was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Area
"From what I've seen out of training, Bri has been pushing really hard. She's kept the level really high, and she's helped carry some of the training sessions so far with her work ethic. I'm excited to work with her throughout the season and to see where we can get her by the end of the season."
Cassidy Wasdin
- Similar to Waggoner, was part of a dynasty-like high school squad, as St. Johns Country Day won three straight Class 1A state titles (2015, 2016, 2017); she added another with The Bolles School in 2018
- Additionally, the 2017 St. Johns team was ranked No. 1 by USA Today/NSCAA
- Was All-County in both 2017 and 2018
"Cass had been out for a bit, but we're getting her back in the swing of things. She's a great personality to be around, and our older keepers are showing her the ropes and just how to be a collegiate goalkeeper. I'm excited to work with her. I think she'll do great things, we just have to get her there. I definitely believe we will."
This trio, along with the combined efforts of the three previous position groups, are all set later Friday night to take on the Hurricanes. Tickets are still available. Visit
