BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's soccer and Head Coach Patrick Baker are pleased to announce the ninth newcomer for the upcoming 2018 season, with in-state product Maddison "Gi" Krstec transferring to the program from the University of Maryland.
Krstec hails from North Port, Florida. She finished her high school soccer career at Lakewood Ranch High School, played club soccer most recently for Tampa Bay United U17, and spent her freshman year of college with Maryland. She will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Owls, and is able to play immediately this fall.
As a high schooler, Krstec earned three varsity soccer MVP honors, was the 2013-14 Sun Coast Player of the year, and 2017 Herald-Tribune Preps Soccer Player of the Year. From 2010 to 2015, she was a member of Florida's Olympic Development Program, and was part of an ODP National Training Camp as well, in 2014. Additionally, she also excelled in both cross country (All-Area, varsity MVP and 2013-14 Sun Coast Runner of the Year) and track and field (holding multiple school records among other honors).
This past year with the Terrapins, she appeared in 14 of the team's 18 matches, starting five, and totaled 624 minutes on the pitch. She scored her first collegiate goal from about 35 yards out (see here: https://twitter.com/TerpsWSoccer/status/914192331905097729) as part of a 2-2 draw with No. 12 Wisconsin, and all told, eight of her 13 shots on the season were on goal for a success rate of 62 percent.
Here's more on FAU's latest signee:
Why Krstec chose FAU: "I'm thrilled for the opportunity Coach Baker has given me, to come back to Florida and play in my home state. I plan to major in psychology and academically, FAU is a great fit for me. I am already familiar with some of the players on the team and am eager to create new and lasting friendships with the rest of the team. I'm looking forward to our winning season."
Coach Baker on Krstec: "We are excited to announce that Maddison Krstec is continuing her academic and athletic careers at Florida Atlantic University. She is a tremendous talent and we are fortunate to have her joining our roster. Maddison is a fierce competitor and can play multiple positions on the field. A number of her playing attributes will fit into our system very well. She will mostly likely play in the midfield for us, and we look forward to her arrival in August."
Krstec becomes the team's third transfer of 2018, after a six-member freshmen class proceeded them on Signing Day. Those nine, at this point, will combine with 21 returnees ahead of the season opener, in just less than a month (Aug. 17 versus Miami).
