BOCA RATON, Fla. – Following a third straight trip to at least the Conference USA Women's Soccer Championship semifinal round, the Florida Atlantic University squad banded together to vote two of those three-year players, Jessica Monteiro and Pernille Velta, as captains for the upcoming 2019 campaign.
"I'm proud to announce our players have chosen Jessica Monteiro and Pernille Velta to lead our women's soccer program in 2019," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "These two young ladies have wonderful individual stories and are committed to improving themselves, their teammates, and the program overall. Jesse and Pernille are part of a nine-player rising senior class that is coming off their first C-USA regular season title in program history. They will serve as first-time captains and are excited to begin the upcoming 2019 journey. Jesse and Pernille reflect our 'Live Like Champions' culture and have so much to offer as people, students, soccer players and leaders. We are fortunate again to have quality young ladies lead our team in what could be another historic fall."
As Baker alluded to, Monteiro and Velta are a part of a class that is set to run nine players deep, and has led the team in three seasons to: 35 total wins, 19 wins within conference play, last year's regular season league title, four postseason victories, two C-USA Championship semifinal berths and a C-USA championship final appearance as well. Monteiro, a midfielder and Estero, Florida native, and Velta, a forward from Kongsvinger, Norway, have each appeared in 61 out of a possible 64 matches over their first three years with the squad.
"Being named one of the captains for the 2019 season is an honor to me, and even more exciting knowing that my teammates support this decision as well. I am super thrilled to help lead my team this upcoming spring and into my senior fall season, and I can't wait for us to accomplish much more this upcoming fall of 2019. I have had the opportunity to be led by some great captains before me and I hope I can take what I learned from them and be a successful captain this upcoming season. Thank you again to my coaches and teammates for this admirable position. I'm excited for what lies ahead!"
"I'm honored to be named captain by my teammates," said Velta. "I have learned a lot from being a part of this team the last three years. We had a good year in 2018, and I believe we can do even greater things in the upcoming season. I'm really excited to help lead these girls in 2019!
Velta, Monteiro, the rest of the rising seniors and another more than a dozen returnees will join with the soon-to-be-announced incoming class for preseason practice in the spring. Next year's season is due to begin in August, as the Owls look for their fifth straight league tournament appearance and hopefully more.
