Florida Atlantic University has chosen Devin Singletary and Fatimah Westbrook as student-athletes of the week.
Â
Singletary, who claimed the FAU's Shula Bowl MVP honors, kept the Owls' winning season hopes alive Saturday night with a spectacular running game. The junior carried the ball 27 times, tallying 185 yards (6.8 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He helped establish FAU's 439-yard rushing attack, which propelled the Owls over FIU in the XVII Shula Bowl. The Deerfield Beach, Florida, product's performance helped him elevate to 62 career rushing TDs, which is tied for ninth in the NCAA's all-time career-rushing TDs. Singletary also earned the CollegeSportsMadness.com Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors and has moved past the single-season 1,000 rushing-yard plateau for a third-consecutive season.
Â
Westbrook has established herself as a force on the swimming and diving team, especially in sprint events. The Lynn University transfer walked away with several top finishes this weekend over Florida Gulf Coast University and Princeton University on Friday and the University of Miami and Boston College on Saturday. Westbrook swept in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning first place in both meets. Her 1:03.94 finish on Friday became a season-best for the junior. Westbrook also touched the wall third in the 100-yard freestyle (53.34) on Friday and 50-yard freestyle (24.29) on Saturday, as well as helped her 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay teams secure third-place titles this weekend.
Â
The FAU football team hopes to keep the momentum going, as their next matchup is against the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers on Saturday at 5 p.m. This is the homecoming game for the Owls, which will be broadcast on Stadium and ESPN West Palm 106.3 FM.
Â
Westbrook and the Owls will be back at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. at FAU Aquatic Center for the annual Family and Alumni Meet. Past and present Owls will be participating in honor of homecoming.
