BOCA RATON, Fla. – On the heels of a historic 2018 season, two more honors have come in for Florida Atlantic University women's soccer, with
Ebba Blomqvist and
Mary O'Hara earning All-South Region recognition from United Soccer Coaches.
Blomqvist wrapped her two-year FAU career with her second All-Region nod in as many years, graduating from last year's Second Team credit to First Team balloting this year. O'Hara, a rising senior, adds to her conference award résumé with her first regional showing, as she has been named a Third team member by the organization.
In each of the last four years, the Owls have won at least 11 matches, making the Conference USA Championship every season, and advancing to at least the semifinal round each of the last three years. Further, in all four seasons, the team has had at least two representatives on the All-Region annals.
Starting in 2015, Owls earning region honors were Claire Emslie (Second Team) and Erica Burt (Third Team). Burt repeated by becoming a Second Team member in 2016, and was joined by First Teamer Sydney Drinkwater, as well as Sammy Rowland on the Third Team. A year ago, Blomqvist was named Second Team and
Asta Arnadottir Third Team. This year's duo makes for four seasons in a row with multiple region representatives, and all told now, there have been 19 All-Region honorees in FAU women's soccer program history.
Here is more from, and on, each honoree:
Ebba Blomqvist – Senior Defender
"It is a true honor for me to receive this recognition, and I want to thank my teammates, coaching staff, and high performance team for making this possible. I am grateful to have been a part of this amazing team, and proud of the history we have made this season."
"Ebba's career concludes at Florida Atlantic University with some wonderful recognition while anchoring the best defense throughout the C-USA season," added Head Coach
Patrick Baker. "She departs as a two-time C-USA All-Conference player and captained our team to another 12-win season this year. Ebba trains and plays at such a high level; she raises the bar for herself and her teammates each day. She left Keiser University as a very decorated player and now leaves FAU with the same levels of high recognition. She will be hard to replace upon graduation. Ebba has been a great reflection of what our program represents on and off the field throughout her time in Boca Raton. She embraces our Live Like Champions message to be that special student-athlete that represents herself to the highest standards in the classroom, on the soccer field and socially. Ebba and the other members of our senior class have left the program far better than they found it and have left a tremendous legacy at FAU."
Mary O'Hara – Junior Midfielder
"I'm so honored to receive this award, we as a team had an amazing year and I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaches. Winning the C-USA regular season title has never been done before so having the opportunity to be a part of something like that was very special."
"Mary enjoyed a tremendous junior year at Florida Atlantic University and has been viewed as one of our top players for some time," said Baker. "Being selected All-Region as an underclassman is special and her play helped lead our team to another double-digit win season this year. We are very proud of her level of consistency throughout the non-conference and C-USA schedule; she was excellent in our run to the C-USA regular season title. After playing somewhat out of position for the betterment of the team in 2017, she played her best soccer as a central attacking midfielder this fall and added some key production to her game. Mary has the ability to make others around her better and plays both sides of the ball well. She can change the complexion of a game with one run, one pass, one shot and showed that many times throughout 2018. Thank goodness we have one more year with Mary and look forward to great things in 2019."
To that end, O'Hara is set to join eight other talented seniors-to-be for their final campaign in 2019, looking for yet another successful season in Boca Raton.
