BOCA RATON, Fla. – In the midst of five straight wins, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team has earned a third consecutive Conference USA weekly honor, with Ebba Blomqvist chosen as C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
In addition to their win streak, the Owls have posted shutouts in each of the last four matches and are 4-0-0 to start a league slate for the first time in program history. Blomqvist played all 180 minutes in twin shutout victories this past weekend over Louisiana Tech (1-0) and Southern Miss (2-0). She aided in limiting the Lady Techsters to just eight shots on Friday, and only two on goal, setting up the late winner for her offense. Then on Sunday, her penalty kick goal began the scoring and served as the game-winner in another C-USA victory, against USM.
"I am honored to receive this recognition, but want to emphasize the defensive work of the entire team throughout our season," said Blomqvist. "Shutouts and defensive success are always results that come from the effort of a team coming together as a unit. With our great team this year, we can achieve historical results; one of them, we hope, is going 5-0-0 in conference on Friday. Go Owls!"
For the senior defender and native of Skovde, Sweden, this is her second C-USA weekly award in two years. She was both a postseason All-Conference USA choice after last year (as well as being named to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region Second Team) and Preseason All-C-USA prior to this season, and is a prime contender for further postseason honors, including C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.
"We are excited to see that Ebba is being honored by C-USA today for her performances against LA Tech and Southern Mississippi; two critical wins and two impressive shutouts for her and her teammates," added Head Coach Patrick Baker. "Most importantly, the team has moved to 4-0-0 in C-USA play and gets above the .500 mark overall for the first time this season at 7-6-0. Her penalty kick conversion proved to be the game-winner yesterday and she continues to have an impressive senior year."
This Friday's match is on the road at UTSA, and FAU will return home the next week for two, versus Old Dominion (Oct. 11) and Middle Tennessee (Oct. 14). To get tickets for the last opportunity to see the Owls in Boca Raton this year, go to www.fausports.com or call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
