GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country squads returned to the course with the full complement of each side and a great deal of personal marks set on Saturday morning.
Men's Notables:
- The squad finished 11th among Division I squads competing
- Jonathan Werble was first across the line, in 55th place, and his time of 27:13 was nearly 30 seconds better than his previous fastest 8K
- John Marting was just a second away from his PR, and was next for the Owls in a time of 27:54
- Just behind him was Sean Barone, one of four freshman running their first collegiate 8K, running a 27:58
- Sophomore Lachlan Shiver also earned a new best, of 18 seconds, crossing in 28:02
Women's Notables:
- The women placed 10th among all teams, eighth in DI, ahead of Miami, USF and Troy, among others
- The top three returning finishers from last year's version of this event were the same Saturday, but in a different order: Bethany Hardcastle placing 33rd overall (of 285 finishers) as the fastest Owl, with a time of 18:55.5, a new PR
- Liz Wellman was three slots later, in 36th, finishing just a split-second behind her teammate in 18:56.7
- Then, in 56th place, was Christina Schultz, in 19:21
- The freshman duo of Megan Giovanniello and Morgan Graff both improved by a great deal since their debut meet. Giovanniello was 14 seconds faster, in 19:46, and Graff was better by nearly a minute, in 19:49
- Christina Humphries tied her PR, while three more Owls set new personal-best marks outright: Carydaliz Fontanez (faster by 1:48), Kelsey Meltzer (24 seconds) and Erika Mares (five seconds)
What's Next:
Both squads next will compete in Lakeland, Florida, at the FLRunners.com Invitational. The meet is scheduled for an evening start, at 5 p.m., next Friday, Sept. 29.
