BOCA RATON, Fla. - For the fourth straight year, the Florida Atlantic University cross country program will host a home meet, with this Friday's FAU Cross Country Invitational opening up the 2017 season for the men and women.
All told, 22 groups and 208 runners are scheduled to compete this Friday evening at South Country Regional Park, located at 12551 Glades Road in Boca Raton. The men will race first, at 6 p.m., with 10 teams and 78 runners invited. The women go off at 6:30, with 12 teams and 130 runners scheduled. Each side will be running a 5K distance.
"We are very excited to host our fourth FAU Cross Country Invitational," said Head Coach Alex Smolka. "We are very fortunate to have the largest amount of teams participating in the meet so far. Based on the entries, it should be a very exciting, competitive race on both the men's and women's sides. We are very much looking forward to seeing how our squads compete and what shape everyone is in after their summer training."
Last year, the Owl women won the FAU Invite team competition while the men finished third. Of returnees, the top Owls on each side were Christina Schultz (seventh, 19:15) and Liz Wellman (eighth, 19:26) for the women, while for the men, it was Jonathan Werble (13th, 16:37) and John Marting (16th, 16:53).
